The first victory of Ulyss Morinda at 140 CSI 3*, in September 2016

Ulyss Morinda

Ulyss Morinda

Ulyss Morinda has just proved to us that he is improving quickly, as at the CSI of Bonheiden in Belgium on the tenth of September 2016 he gave us a superb victory, first in the 140 class amongst a field of 69. There were many nations represented there, amongst which an English combination finished second, a Dutch pair were third and others present were from Belgium (of course), France, Spain, the USA, Mexico and others. It was his first victory over 140 and we are naturally very proud of him. A big bravo is due to Rik Hemeryck who has brought him to this level of competition.

On this page you will find some photos of his day of triumph as well as a video of his winning round and the beginning of the prize giving.

You should take note that the course at the Jumping of Bonheiden is particularly difficult, being very spooky with enormous advertising panels! Some nervous horses would not jump well (probably not at all) in such circumstances. I should also point out that the collecting ring is very small. But Ulyss was never ill at ease at all and he and Rik make a very redoubtable pairing.

Some of Ulyss Morinda's young stock

With the births of 2016 we are beginning to have an idea of the produce of Ulyss Morinda, who is now actually the sire of a number of offsprings of which one is a three year old and one a two year old. All the rest were born in 2016.

Ulyss seems to produce young stock with size, bone and good blood. A great proportion of his colts are coloured, even when they have whole coated dams. The earlier ones are not quite so chic about their heads but this year he has produced many who are very chic, with arab heads (even when the dams have not passed on this elegance to their older progeny apart from one who is a thoroughbred).

Birth of two new foals

Ulyss Morinda who has has given some magnificent coloured foals this year to all the breeders who have put their confidence in us….has not wanted to do the same for us!

On the 16th of April, Quer Bunz Varnel decided to foal and give us a handsome male who is big, has plenty of bone, a strong back end and some strong points but…..he is bay, like his mother. We have called him Galisco U Morinda, U for Ulyss of course whose first colt he is this year.

On the 17th of June, it was the turn of Viki du Lurentin to give us a filly….chestnut like her mother! Having said this, this filly is truly chic, such a success that we are head over heels in love with her.

Welcome to the superb Gaia Morinda!

That said, Ulyss, we were asking for COLOURED foals!!!!! Happily, the other breeders are very satisfied!

Ulyss Morinda on his launch into CSI 3 and 4*

After competing in two national competitions in Belgium and having also participated in two CSI at Cagnes sur Mer, Ulyss Morinda and Rik Hemeryck continued to the CSI at Compiegne, the CSI of Le Touquet and the CSI of Bourg en Bresse which will be the very first ‘4 star’ for our young eight year old stallion.

Bourg en Bresse will be followed rapidly by a second ‘4 star’ at Poznan in Poland.

Here is Ulyss in Compiegne. He was placed and was much remarked upon as usual for his perfect style and the fluidity of his rounds.

In May 2016 we were made very proud when Rik Hemeryck took Ulyss to the Jumping at Bourg en Bresse, an impressive competion where the stands were packed to bursting! Ulyss attacked these 145 courses and immediately proved, before a crowd of enthusiasts, that this new height posed him no problem whatsoever. Worth noting is that Ulyss Morinda was the ONLY coloured horse competing at that magnificent venue.

Ulyss Morinda begins his 2016 season on top form at the GPA Jump Festival of Cagnes sur Mer

Ulyss Morinda, under the saddle of his rider Rik Hemeryck of course, calmly kicked off his season with three classes of 130 and 135 in Belgium then he set off for the French Riviera, and the GPA Jump Festival at Cagnes sur Mer. The horses from the Hemeryck-Godart stable were entered in the second and third CSI, taking place from the 30th of March to the 10th of April 2016.

Ulyss Morinda competed in his first 140 class and seeing that he dominated the situation Rik decided to continue with him over this height. Here is a video and a few photos of his first CSI :

Ulyss Morinda finishes his 2015 season at Liege

After winning the Stallion Masters at Saint-Lo in October, Ulyss Morinda finished his 2015 season on a high note at the famous CSI 4 star event at Liege in Belgium. Of course, he was taking part in the seven year old classes (CSIYH).

Ulyss Morinda

On the first day he went clear, finishing equal first with the other seven year olds who were clear, and on the second day he took a very good fifth place in the “Best of Belgium” class. Here is the video where you can see that Ulyss superbly ignores the horse which was a nuisance at the end of the triple. While competing he stays very focused.

Ulyss finished the competition with a nice little course over 1.10m (clear of course) reuniting a pro with an amateur rider. Rik Hemeryck allowed himself to be convinced to bring back out his coloured stallion for a final time at the express request of the organisers.

The photos below were, naturally, taken during the seven year old classes.

Ulyss Morinda wins the Stallion Masters for Seven year olds

Ulyss Morinda has not been long in making himself well known amongst the Selle Français stallions. We profited from his recent approval to enter him at Saint-Lo on the 24th of October 2015, in the Stallion Masters for Selle Francais, in the seven year old category, of course.

Rik Hemeryck had agreed to be free to make this long journey and on the evening of Friday the 23rd, Ulyss Morinda and he arrived. On the Saturday morning it was the presentation for conformation and paces where a Ulyss on top form didn’t delay in making his mark. He obtained a score of 16 out of 20, groomed and presented in hand by Valentine Lessourd.

Ulyss Morinda

On Saturday afternoon, over fences of 1.35m, Ulyss and Rik did two different rounds, with double clears. Ulyss had excellent marks, of which, amongst others, a 9 out of 10 for style and an 8.5 out of 10 for “class, energy and intelligence”. The same mark for “balance, movement and responsiveness”.

Ulyss Morinda

Ulyss Morinda thus won his title as best 7 year old, along side the best 4 year old, the best 5 year old and the best 6 year old (presented by Roger-Yves Bost). Bravo Rik and thank you for having brought him on and presented him. It’s probably the very first time that a coloured horse has won the “Masters” reserved for Selle Francais stallions.

ULYSS MORINDA has been approved as a stallion by the Selle Français stud-book

After a brilliant 2015 season for Ulyss Morinda with numerous placings in CSIYH as well as in 1.35m and 1.40m competitions in Belgium, the Selle Francais studbook decided to send judges to the CSI in Macon (from the 20th to 23rd of August 2015) to evaluate our young stallion, seven years old. The principal judge was the well known rider Michel Martinot.

Ulyss Morinda

On the first day all the seven year olds did a competition at 1.30m not against the clock. Ulyss Morinda, ridden as expected by Rik Hemeryck, did a lovely clear round. The judges who had followed him from the paddock came to see him now as a model and Monsieur Martinot did not hide from us that Ulyss pleased him a lot. In particular he repeated a number of times that the stallion was “very fast in front”.

On the second day Ulyss was placed 4th in the 1.35m CSIYH class and the third day he was also placed in the final of the 1.40m.

In September we thus learned, during the commission of approbation of the "Grande Semaine" in Fontainebleau, that in view of his general dossier, Ulyss Morinda has been made one of the stallions approved by the Selle Français stud-book. It is worth noting that his CIRALE visit was impeccable : 5*, and that his blood line goes back to the famous UTRICULE (by the TB Monceaux), the Grand Prix mare of Marc Roguet and the mother of QUABRI DE LALEU, a stallion ridden by Herve Godignon. Utricule also produced amongst others, PIPERAZINE LALEU by Laudanum, grandmother of Ulyss Morinda.

Monceaux, Laudanum – Ulyss Morinda possesses two of the best thoroughbred bloodlines around.

Purchase of Vantage

Just a short time after receiving the results of the test on Flamboyant V Morinday, which showed us that we possessed a colt who was homozygous for the Tobiano gene as well as being a son of Visage Van de Olmenhoeve, we discovered that a second such colt existed, born in the UK. And what was more, this magnificent colt who greatly resembles ours, was for sale. He had been named UCS Vantage and his homozygous mother has very interesting papers (Sempatico x Sambuco B), and magnificent conformation.

UCS Vantage

UCS Vantage

We immediately contacted the breeder, a very nice lady, and reached an agreement in just a few minutes : UCS Vantage will be joining the Morinda Stud after being weaned and the two half brothers will be brought up together. We expect to have some magnificent photos of them in the future since they are both bear the unmistakeable stamp of their father Visage.

Something that is very curious is that Visage has never passed on his blue eye (a wall eye) to his foals, not one of them, except possibly via Une Star Morinda to whom he has given three foals all with a single blue eye. We have been thinking that these probably come from Une Star herself, despite the fact that her 2014 foal with Troubadour de Wisbecq has two brown eyes. But….. Vantage also has a single very blue eye. We can only conclude that Visage passes on a blue eye, and in this case electric blue, when bred with homozygous mares…. Genetics are full of surprises.

UCS Vantage

In theory, there should be two homozygous stallions by Visage Van de Olmenhoeve here in three or four years time!

Birth of Flamboyant V Morinda

Over the years we have been trying to produce a homozygous male, and in particular a son of Visage Van de Olmenhoeve. In fact, at present all stallions who are homozygous for the Tobiano gene are horses from Dressage lines, who have never competed in show jumping classes except perhaps in very low key events of 1.10 or below.

The two best stallions competing in show jumping up to Grand Prix level (1.60m) were not homozygous. These are Utah van Erpekom ridden by John Whittaker and Visage Van de Olmenhoeve ridden by Stephan Lafouge for 18 months in France and after that based in Australia. They hadn’t, to our knowledge, any male homozygous descendants, at least not in Europe.

In 2007 we put a beautiful coloured mare in foal to Utah van Erpekom by embryo transfer and obtained the first homozygous foal born on our stud….. but it was a filly whom we called Une Star Morinda.

When she was a three year old she was covered by Visage Van de Olmenhoeve and gave us a superb homozygous filly (born in 2012). We were overjoyed to have Cybele Morinda…… but she was not the future stallion we wanted. On the second attempt, the following year, she gave us a second filly, Dragibus Morinda, a full sister to the first one. We then changed stallion and had Une Star Morinda inseminated By Troubadour d’Aurel (Troubadour By Wisbecq), son of Aiglon Roughe and absolutely spectacular over poles, even though his results are not as impressive as those of his older offspring. This third try at last gave us an absolutely magnificent colt, but he turned out not to be homozygous. Tolkien Morinda Z is now in the UK.

Une Star Morinda was covered once more by Visage and in 2015 we at last succeeded : a very beautiful colt was born on the 26th of May 2015, with a blue eye like his mother and his two full sisters as well as his aunt, Valentine de Grisy. And he has tested HOMOZYGOUS for the Tobiano gene.

A warm welcome to Flamboyant V Morinda, son of Visage Van de Olmenhoeve !

Birth of Triskele Morinda Z

After the birth in 2014 of Cantor Morinda Z, we were waiting with a great deal of impatience for the second foal of our magnificent Vision. And well we might have…..when the foal arrived it was a big beautiful filly, by Troubadour d’Aurel (better known under the name of Troubadour By Wisbecq).

Vision gave us absolutely no warning of the imminent arrival : no sign whatsoever. She was due on the 1st of May, and we were thinking of taking her to the vet’s on Monday 27th of April, but just before this, she decided to foal on the 25th of April, all by herself with no surveillance….We found the filly already dry in the process of feeding. Please don’t do this ever again, Vision !

Triskèle Morinda Z

Triskèle Morinda Z

Triskele Morinda Z is as at ease with people as her mother. A darling of a filly, and one who is also bounding with energy. She shows great promise !

Ulyss Morinda makes his debut in CSI 7 year classes.

After having been 6 year old Hunter champion of France in 2014 (photo below),

Ulyss Morinda has returned to his true calling, CSO (show jumping). At the beginning of 2015 he became part of Rik Hemeryck’s stables – the great Belgian rider, a member of their first team for many years. Rik tried Ulyss for one month and decided to keep him. At this point in his career Ulyss had never seen a fence bigger than 1.20m, which to us is perfect : too many horses are overjumped as 5 and 6 year olds…..

As a seven year old Ulyss therefore made his debut with Rik in three competitions at 1.20m (3 clear rounds). A 1.25m, then he has passed on to the 1.30m competitions where he started showing his calibre.

Very quickly Rik decided to keep him. After having done a 1.35m in Belgium where Ulyss once again produced a clear round, Rik entered him in April for his first CSI in Hardelot. On the first day Ulyss was placed 11th and on the second day 5th. He has started to make himself noticeable.

In May 2015 Ulyss competed in 7 year old classes in CSI 3* at Le Touquet, something which seemed to be totally out of his reach at the beginning of the year. But he did it with true ease…. A double clear round the first two days and 4 faults on the third day. Many people asked us for him, not least one of the best French riders !

In the two CSI in which he competed, Ulyss was the sole coloured horse. We are very proud of him, and a big BRAVO to Rik Hemeryck, a fantastic rider with whom Ulyss is very happy (daily turn out in the paddock amongst other things).

The couple have now departed for the CSIYH of Ascona in Switzerland.

Birth of Flying Lady Morinda

Flying Lady Morinda
Flying Lady, 8 days

And about the four!!!!!!

For the fourth time Stacy and Visage van de Olmenhoeve have had a baby together. There are thus two males and two females in existence, all full brothers and sisters :

the two males are Vizir Morinda Z ridden by Stephan Lafouge and Excel Morinda born in 2014 (in principle a future stallion).

As for the two fillies, they are Daylight Morinda (born in 2013) who is bringing happiness to her owner, and finally, on the 7th of April 2015 we welcomed the lovely Flying Lady Morinda, bursting with energy (which is where her name comes from).

The four brothers and sisters resemble one another enormously, all bearing the unmistakable stamp of their father Visage with his pretty arabic head which he passes on to his progeny, and lots of class.

Flying Lady Morinda has an exceptional character. She’s very curious and very at home with people. She was immediately sold to Rebecca and Sebastian who were enraptured with her, and if they hadn’t bought her we would have had many other requests to buy her. We hope that she will have a superb career.

Births of foals in 2014

Stacy and Aloha Morinda were due at practically the same time, with a fortnight’s interval due dates in March 2014. But although Stacy foaled just a few days late on the 13th March, giving us a superbe colt by Visage van de Olmenhoeve, Aloha Morinda, on the other hand, took her time. It was only on the 8th of April that she decided to show us one of the most beautiful fillies we have ever bred, a daughter of Troubadour d’Aurel (Troubadour by Wisbecq), and extremely well marked.

Tropicale Morinda Z

A colt and a filly …… the year was beginning well. Very quickly Excel Morinda and Tropicale Morinda Z beame the best friends in all the world, real accomplices, quite inseparable…..each as classy as the other, it is a pleasure to see them together and to watch them playing! Despite that, sadly, it will be necessary to separate them from the age of one…..

Tropicale Morinda Z

The year was far from over from the point of view of foalings. A little after the birth of Tropicale, it was the first long awaited colt from our magnificent Vision Morinda who arrived on the 12th of April. A son of Canturo and… COLOURED ! We were overjoyed above all because this proves that Vision, born at home with an extraordinary coat colouration, seems to have decided to pass on her Tobiano gene! This very handsome colt, big, classy and with plenty of bone was named Cantor Morinda Z. He was exported to Belgium.

Cantor Morinda

Cantor Morinda

On the 23rd of April it was Une Star Morinda who gave us a splendid colt (a coloured baby, as expected seeing as Une Star is homozygous) by Troubadour d’Aurel, the same sire as Tropicale. We have called him Tolkien Morinda Z. This colt has been a true success, with superb paces and an excellent character, but unfortunately he hasn’t tested as homozygous. He was off to the UK after weaning.

Une Star and Tolkien Morinda Z, Avril 30 2014

Une Star and Tolkien Morinda Z, Avril 30 2014

Finally, to finish the season, the lovely Queen Star d’Hem, a grey Anglo Arab, gave us a bay Pie filly with Visage van de Olmenhoeve as sire on the 25th of May. We really weren’t expecting to have a coloured foal, especially not one who doesn’t have the Grey gene so she won’t lighten in shade as she ages. But it happened ! This magnificent filly, Valia Morinda Z (the name of a famous Tzigane singer), just as smart as Visage’s other progeny and with incredible amount of energy, straight away seduced Iris, a young Intern passionate about horses. Have a good life both of you, Doctor !

Queen Star d'Hem

As you can see, 2014 was a very good year for the Morinda stud with these five coloured foals (three colts and two fillies), every one of them very beautiful like their sires : 1 Canturo, 2 Visage and 2 Troubadour !

Birth of Dragibus Morinda

Dragibus Morinda

On the 5th of May, Une Star Morinda who was due to give birth on the 16th, decided that she couldn't wait any longer and produced a second filly by Visage van de Olmenhoeve. Once again, unsurprisingly, she has managed to throw an exact clone of herself, who looks just as much like her sister Cybele Morinda who was born in 2012.

This filly was born at the Circee Stud and the moment she was born and we announced the birth, they asked us if she was for sale. In view of the fact that Une Star herself is only a five year old we were happy to agree to sell Dragibus (the name chosen by the Circee Stud which refers to the "little peas" marking her flanks).

Dragibus Morinda

Dragibus Morinda has therefore beaten all records for speed of sale since she was born at 4 in the morning and was sold by 9! We are very happy that the Circee Stud has chosen a Morinda filly as their future foundation mare for breeding coloured horses. Dragibus will stay with them and will prove herself in competitions before becoming a brood mare.

Une Star Morinda is going to be covered again by the phenomenal Troubadour d'Aurel (renamed Troubadour de Wisbecq) who drew a great deal of attention in the CCI for six year olds. We will take the opportunity here to announce that Aloha Morinda is already in foal for 2014 to this magnificent stallion (Aiglon Rouge x Limbo).
